Where I'm (really) from
I was born and raised in East London. My mother is from Hong Kong and my father from mainland China. My family moved to the UK in the 1970s to build a new life. I grew up as a Chinese takeaway kid, watching my mum cook and my grandmother make spring rolls. Living between British and Chinese cultures shaped my understanding of identity, belonging and navigating different worlds. Moving to Switzerland in my late 30s added another layer to that experience. I understand what it can be like to live between cultures, and how questions of identity, family expectations, independence and belonging can be difficult to put into words.
